How to make your garden grow,
Take it easy, take it slow,
There's no need to hurry.
Find a place that's safe and sound
Plant the seed below the ground,
There's no need to worry.
Chorus
Comes a time you will know,
What you reap is what you sow,
What goes round comes around,
Like the sun.
If you only take away,
Soon enough there'll come a day,
When you pay for all the things
You left undone.
Time goes by, before you know
Summer rain is winter snow,
You take it for granted.
Count the flowers one by one,
Realise the things you've won
Are things that you've planted
Chorus
The moon is riding in the sky,
Your soul is weak, you wonder why
The seagulls are crying.
Time to stop and look inside,
Feel the motions of the tide.
You better start trying.
A Rose in the Sand
(Part 3 of "The Garden")
Look at all the flowers in the garden
Dai dum da da da dai da
Who put all the flowers in the garden?
Dai dum da da da dai da
You can grow a tree in the shingle
Or you can grow a rose in the sand
For all you need is a single seed
And very soon you'll understand
That there are some who do and some who don't
It's all very sad but true
There are some who will and some who won't
Can you tell me which one are you?
There are some who give and some who take
It's all very sad but true
There are some who feel and some who fake
Can you tell me which one are you?
I never cease to wonder at our extraordinary ability to inflict pain on each other. Even more wonderful is our ability to recover from these sometimes devastating blows and continue, not only to live, but to be hopeful and even creative. Derek Jarman's magical garden at Dungeness is a supreme example of the creative urge triumphing over adversity, and provided the initial inspiration for these two songs.
To the "you" of my songs (you know who you are), I'm still here, in spite of you.
